Thank you for being there for me. Thanks for always being willing to listen to my problems, no matter how strange they may seem. I know you’ve had a rather checkered past, but you’ve always been a loyal friend to me, and I really appreciate that. Thanks.

Gladys –
Thank you for helping me through the tough times. It means a lot to me, having someone there who’s willing to come and comfort me when I need it. I’m here for you too, if you ever need it. Thanks.

Aubrey –
Thank you for being someone I can pal around with. It’s nice having someone to talk science with, even if we’re technically in different fields. And it’s nice having someone else around who enjoys building and inventing. Thanks.

Revan –
Thank you for being there when I first fell through the Rift. I have no idea what I would have done if I’d had to orient myself to this strange new world alone. Thank you for being my guide and teaching me new things, Jeedi pateesa. Thanks.

JD –
Thank you for treating me like someone important. Granted, discovering I’m technically fictional was a bit of a shock, but it was nice to see how enthusiastic you were to meet me. I’ve never really had a fan before, and – it felt good. Thanks.

Thank you for making me laugh at a time when very little in my life seemed funny. I was really hurting that day, and you helped a lot by stopping and talking. I hope we can meet up again one day, and maybe I can repay the favor. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing a cup of tea and some other pleasant conversations with me. The Nexus can be a rather scary place at times, and it’s good to know I have someone I can count on for some pleasant conversation and maybe even a little building and tinkering time. Thanks.

Thank you for showing me there’s a definite good side to my weather powers. A lot of the time, all I can think of is the annoyances they cause me, like getting me wet at night. I really enjoyed seeing your face light up when I created the snow, or laughing with me about my cloud creations. Thanks.

Thank you for being my friend. When we first met, I was a very lonely young boy who didn’t get a lot of respect from his peers. Having someone who was willing to stand up for me (and my sister), who liked me just for who I was – it meant a lot. I really hope you’re doing well these days. Thanks.

There's this great movie called A Beautiful Mind that I love, which made the effort. It's a classic.

I doubt you have to worry about sterilization zones; my world seems much more desperate and panicky-violent about supernatural things than others. I never really considered how brutal we are until I talked with people here.

Yikes. I suppose not -- the native supernatural population would probably never allow it. Probably more likely all the mundane people will end up moving out of Chicago first.

Its a fictionalization about a Nobel laureate in Economics - and a compelling look into madness, because he was insane. Clinically insane. I wouldn't call it a feel-good movie, but there was some kind of solace in it.

It sounds like you've got a sizeable supernatural population. That right there is a major difference. I'm the only person I know who has significant powers. Others are exceedingly rare, and put down as soon as they make themselves obvious.

That sounds wonderful. Are the supernaturals integrated with plain humans, or is it kept secret?

Yes, with great thoroughness and finality. Madness accompanies power, and that never turns out well for those without the power. Its generally felt to be better to be safe than horrifically sorry.

Kept secret, from what I can see. Though sometimes I think the regular people are being deliberately obtuse. (I emit steam on occasion. No one notices?) Anyway, I suppose it wouldn't be good for anyone's sanity if they knew angels and demons kept trying to wage war around them, and people from other universes kept falling through Rifts into their world.

I admit I noticed the steam. I assumed it was from some kind of mechanical device - possibly some system of steam-powered braces, as for a handicap - or maybe some natural process. Though we were in the Nexus, so people who are different from what I'm used to are practically the norm.

Its fine. I've got plenty of years ahead of me, and I've had a good life. Really, is it any different from facing Alzheimer's? Treatment is just a little more final.

Yeah, it has to do with my internal processes. It's a long story, but in the end I kind of run off steam power. I figured the Nexusians wouldn't make much of it. I was talking about the average person on the street in Chicago. I think they just figure "people don't emit steam" and ignore it. Humans have a great capacity for that, from what I can see.

Ha, yeah, I guess I should have been thinking about average every day people. Like you said, they're good at seeing what ought to be there.

I am! Look at all the great people I know and the cool stuff I get to see. Sometimes I get a bit upset at things, but even at its worst, my life is pretty good.

In general, biology is neat. It's amazing, all these things that are put together to make a body. And it's downright incredible when you think of all the myriad things that can go wrong, but the whole thing continues on. And it repairs itself!

That's very true. I've just always been more mechanically minded myself. When I was younger, I got squeamish around blood. And then Andrew But I will admit to being astounded at how the human body works. Incredible animals, humans.

...I'm a little squeamish when I encounter the inside of the body close up. Flesh and blood are just - they're foul and they constantly exude dirt. How is it fair that something can get dirty just by sitting there for long enough? So gross.
